The Best Dressed Mascots in College Football
A whole bunch of college football teams are currently facing each other in a series of awkwardly-named, predominantly-irrelevant bowl games to determine… well, essentially nothing at all. No offense to the Marshall Buffalo (7-6), who upset the Florida International Golden Panthers (8-5) in The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl held in St. Petersburg last week, but we’re going to agree with most of America and say the BCS is deeply flawed.
So, rather than picking which .500 team will take home the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas on Saturday, we’ve instead picked the four best-dressed mascots in the Bowl Championship Series.
4. THE FIGHTING IRISH LEPRECHAUN – UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME
vs. Florida State – Champs Sports Bowl; December 29th 5:30pm ET
Donning bespoke green tails and a tilted-down Irish country hat, Notre Dame’s Leprechaun is the poster boy for whimsical collegiate sophistication. While we would rarely endorse color coordinating vest with shoes, in the leprechaun’s case it seems almost compulsory. As is the chinstrap beard and magical shillelagh (jettisoned for hand-to-hand combat.)
3. THE CAVALIER ON HORSEBACK – UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
Vs. Auburn – The Chic-fil-A Bowl; December 31st; 7:30pm ET
The UVA cavalier is one few gentlemen who can successfully pull off a 17th century cassock these days. Atop his trusted American Warmblood Quarter Horse, the tritorne-capped musketeer sports knee-high English riding boots and a holstered, ornamental silver lancing sword. We’d like to see some leather-based pant alternatives to the somewhat ungentlemanly nylon blue striped spandex, but all-in-all a fine get up.
2. THE RAMBLIN’ WRECK OF GEORGIA TECH
Vs. Utah – Hyundai Sun Bowl; December 31st; 2pm ET
Those good ol’ boys at the Georgia Institute of Technology know you don’t need be a flesh and bones mascot to be a well-dressed one. The Wreck, a gold-bodied, white-topped, quail-capped, 1914 Ford Model T, is flanked by chrome and brass struts and white running-boards upon which a dozen cheerleaders ride as the wreck leads its team out onto the field.
1. THE DEAMON DECON – WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY
Vs. Miss State – The Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl; Dec 30th 2:40pm ET
We’re not sure if it’s the pious profession, the bucket top hat, the bespoke motorcycle or simply the striking resemblance to Mr. Peanut, but The Demon Deacon of Wake Forest remains, in our opinion, the best dressed mascot in all of college sports. Unlike the Leprechaun of Note Dame, the Deacon understands that tails require a bowtie, full stop. We’ll look past the fact that it’s yellow and seven sizes too big.
Demonic men of God, on the whole, get passes from us.
