Hedi Slimane, YSL and Why It Matters

The gentleman before you is Hedi Slimane, occasional photographer and sculptor, and (as of this morning) official creative director of Yves Saint Laurent, a post once held by Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati and, just 12 years ago, Hedi himself.

It’s big news in the capital-F Fashion world, but it should make a difference for anyone with lapels—even if you’re not keeping an eye on runway shows. So we’ve put together a quick guide to why you should care...

A quick dialogue on why Hedi Slimane matters»

The Men of the Hour of the Year, 2011

There were a lot of stylish men in 2011, and we did our best to wade through them all, week by week, and pick out the best ones.

Some were just good. Others were frighteningly great. And then, there were the five best—the five gentlemen who stood atop humanity in an impeccably cut tuxedo, basking in their own handsomeness and the potential for human achievement. Those are the five we bring to your attention today...

Our top five MOTHs, in no particular order»

The Suave and the Goofy

Alexander Skarsgårdvia GoaG

The movie world is a strange place. There are the superhumanly suave movie stars, of course—hey, there’s one on the right—but there are also regular people who eat and breathe and sometimes make goofy facial expressions.

And when they end up in the same photo, it’s hilarious.

This one comes from a party last week for Melancholia. Alexander Skarsgård was dressed for the occasion in a gunmetal YSL suit, looking as if he’d just stepped out of a cologne ad. 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer looked a little bit goofier, as if he’d just stepped out of... well, 30 Rock. It’s quite a contrast, but somehow, each of them manages to make the other one look cooler—even as Mr. McBrayer seems to be fighting to keep control of his hands.

Ever the gentleman, Skarsgård was unfazed. Well played, sir.

Kempt Man of the Hour: Cameron Silver

Here claim his third MOTH—only the second fellow to score a hat trick so far, the first being Hamish Bowles—is dandified Los Angeles vintage clothing kingpin Cameron Silver. We might have expected the irrepressible Mr. Silver to rescue us from the sartorial lapses of summer with something like the study in brown and cream he wore to the opening of the new Prada store in San Franciso.

Kempt Man of the Hour: Waris Ahluwalia

Waris Ahluwalia is much more than just the cool Indian guy in the Wes Anderson movies; he's also a jewelry designer and one of the best-dressed men in town, though people tend to focus on the turban and not his threads.

The other night a Purple magazine Fashion Week party at Paul Sevigny's crypto-swank Beatrice Inn, his favorite haunt, Waris bowled us over in a bespoke brown, green and burgundy flecked herringbone wool tweed suit with a forest green wool waistcoat and a crimson knitted wool tie: a perfectly balanced and seasonal palette that's as warming to look upon as it must be to wear.

Kempt Man of the Hour: Adrian Grenier

In our never-ending quest to improve the entertainment industry's sartorial standards, we're glad to see that somewhat scruffy *Entourage* star Adrian Grenier is stepping up his style. At a charity ball he hosted to raise money for building wells in Africa the other night, Grenier looked quite dashing in a bespoke Duncan Quinn creation.

Kempt Man of the Hour: Wass Stevens

Waas Stevens

At Marquee these days where he mans the velvet rope he's known simply as the “The Hammer,” but anyone who's frequented NYC hotspots for the past decade recognizes Wass Stevens as one of the most provocatively-dressed dudes wherever he happens to be. An actor by day with a burgeoning CV, the former boxer and assistant district attorney favors the custom creations of Ron & Ron, which combine “class with a hint of rogue”, mixed in with select A-list label pieces.
