Upgrading Your Winter Gear by Cold Factor

  • Kempt Staff

Winter means different things to different people—as we speak, it’s already in the 30s on the Eastern Seaboard, while it’s still teetering upon 60 degrees out west.

That’s the difference between needing a light-gauge cashmere scarf and a hefty merino wool one (and only a month away from considering industrial-grade alpaca). So to help you find the right gear for what’s happening in your neck of the woods, we’ve put together:

The cold/frigid/freezing guide to your scarves, gloves and hats...»

The Six Sunglasses to Consider This Winter

  • Najib Benouar

It’s something you tend to forget when the temperatures begin descending toward bone-chilling: the sun will still be out.

And more than likely, it will continue to shine directly into your eyes. (Or, worse, make for some blinding glare off a fresh coat of snow.) Which means you shouldn’t be taking your eyewear any more lightly this time of year. Fortunately, we’ve rounded up the season’s finest new offerings.

The Tie Bar Gets into the Scarf Game

  • Kempt Staff

Just in time to ward off any stiff winds in your neck’s near future, the neckwear enthusiasts at the Tie Bar have unveiled their first line of scarves.

And, as to be expected, they’re good looking, wrap around your neck and go for about a third of what you’ll spend at most shops for the same thing (it’s hard to find a good tasseled scarf these days). For the most part, they’re in 100% wool and the requisite plaids and a sharp navy blue, but there were a couple that especially caught our eye—and were vaguely reminiscent of our favorite knit tie, like the number above. All in all, it’s a handsome lot of mufflers that ought to have your neck protected and add a sliver of intrigue to an otherwise charcoal-gray season—which is all you can ask for in a scarf, really.

Sunglasses for Any Season

Moscot glasses

It’s been hard to get excited about some of the early spring and summer gear that’s begun trickling into shops when it still feels like winter out...

But here’s something you can actually start wearing now: the new collection of sunglasses from NYC’s retro opticians at Moscot. The designs are all based on archives from their heyday in the earlier half of the century (they’re coming up on their 100th anniversary in a couple years) and have been inspired by the stories of their neighborhood’s denizens—our favorite pair of the bunch, shown above, was named for the family lawyer, Zev.

More looks at the rest of the new ocular offerings from Moscot, after the jump.»

Your Ski Chalet Essentials

Now that ski season is in full swing, it’s imperative that you properly equip your chalet (or, at the very least, the place you’ll live this winter) to make sure you’re getting the most out of your wintry escapades. The ideal winter den requires a strong balance of ruggedness, alpinism and—above all else—coziness.

And we’ve got just the five things you’ll need to strike that balance, from animal hide to open flame.»

The State of the Sled

  • Najib Benouar

News of yesterday’s record-setting snowball fight in Seattle got us thinking about how there was a time in our lives when snow in the forecast was an exciting thing—instead of just a notice to allot a few extra minutes for our morning commute.

And more specifically, it got us thinking about the holiest of snow-day pastimes: sledding (hey, we did make a sled a winter must-have). After some cursory research, we were surprised to learn that the sledding industry is alive and thriving—possibly as strong as it has ever been. In fact, the options are nearly endless, from the old-school variety to the sort of snow-bullet you’d imagine someone named Sven spent his life perfecting. There are even concept snow sleds.

So we slalomed through them all and found the five finest sleds for whatever snow-centric endeavors you might have planned in the near future.»

Sammy Sosa, the Detroit Auto Show and a Wintry Cocktail

  • Kempt Staff

Say It Ain’t Sosa: Sammy Sosa has a Pinterest page. It’s full of amazingly staged shots of him. Almost equally mind-boggling: how the photos of him in the canary sweater didn’t instantly become a meme sensation. Internet, consider this a formal challenge.

Street Legal: Our octane-enamored partners in crime at Driven give us an in-depth look at the new face of American muscle coming out of Detroit.

A Gentlemanly Soak: One man’s journey to bathtub enlightenment, as told by Valet’s editor. (Good to know, in case your nearest hot tub is out of order.)

Bucking Branca: Esquire hips us to a solid wintry cocktail—that gets extra points for incorporating Fernet.
