Some New Old Sunglasses

  • Najib Benouar

Here we are. Wet hot American summer, day one. First order of business: shades. This won’t be our last recommendation for the bright summer to come, but a good place to start would be the old-school opticians over at Shuron. They’ve been making spectacles for Americans since the late 1800s (when people were still calling them spectacles), and they’ve just released a new iteration of their classic Freeway glasses, the Freeway 2012, with opaque frames in root beer and lenses in a green bottle tint. It’s a retro look for sure—something we’d imagine Truman Capote wearing poolside while “writing” at his Hamptons hideaway...

But that’s how you planned on spending your summer anyhow.

Rock This Town

The information that downtown dude John Varvatos had opened a boutique in uptown East Hampton somehow passed us by, but then we spend more time upstate than on the East End these days—for reasons which should be obvious enough if you've ever been bumper-to-bumper on the Montauk Highway.

In any case, the designer who recently revamped CBGBs celebrated the first anniversary of his Hamptons outpost the other night with an exhibition of photos by the legendary Mick Rock, famous for his iconic shots of the likes of Iggy, Bowie, and Syd Barrett.
