Super hi-def screens are usually put to use for loud, explosive and Bayified entertainments, but there’s plenty of more contemplative ways to use the same gear. Case in point: Criterion just released a Blu-Ray transfer of Terence Malick’s Pacific epic The Thin Red Line, and it might be the best use of a Blu-Ray player you’ll make all year. The running time pushes three hours, but nearly every frame is worth hanging on your wall…which is to say, you’ll get a whole lot more out of all those extra pixels.
