Capsule Show New York, by the Numbers

  • Caitlin Ganswindt

Capsule

Twice a year, in six cities, menswear designers, buyers, editorialists and enthusiasts flock to the tailored temple of Capsule Show. Yesterday, the leather-bound steamer trunks and garment bags arrived in droves at New York’s South Street, chock-full of new collections for SS14.

Naturally, Team Kempt hit the pavement (or, you know, carpeted warehouse) of Pier 36 in the name of trend spotting and lesson learning. With over 250 brands in attendance, we thought it best to provide a bit of a highlight reel for our loyal followers.

As such, a scientific breakdown of the scene after the jump.»

Menswear Bling, Bar Refaeli’s Instagram and Some New Suitsupply

  • Kempt Staff

Bar Refaeli

No Uomo: A Suitable Wardrobe extols the traditional virtues of menswear “bling.”

Filtered Filters: The enterprising techies at Complex were kind enough to rifle through Bar Refaeli’s Instagram feed to find the 25 most attractive shots.

Fear and Clothing: A sneak peek at Suitsupply’s new fish-eyed lookbook.

Cava & Halmos: Jeff Halmos of menswear label Shipley & Halmos and wife Lisa Mayock (of Vena Cava) give GQ a house tour.

Shipley & Halmos Fall/Winter ’12 Line, Annotated

Shipley & Halmos’s latest fall/winter lookbook just arrived in our inbox, and as usual, it’s pretty sharp stuff. It’s got at least two of 2012’s signature items—the shearling coat and the unstructured fedora, for those keeping score—and the whole thing is just a little bit brighter than real life usually is.

To give you a sense of what you’re seeing, we’ve broken it down look-by-look after the jump. Take a gander…

Our favorites from Shipley & Halmos’s new fall/winter line»

Test-Driving Shipley & Halmos’s First Cologne

This Wednesday, Shipley & Halmos launched their first cologne, a piney concoction brewed up by Brooklyn’s D.S. & Durga.

They only made 99 bottles of the stuff, but somehow we managed to get our hands on one of them. It’s big on lavender, with a few touches of suntan oil—but let’s face it, you don’t care about the parfumerie lingo. You want to know what it really smells like—so we enlisted a few of our most verbose female acquaintances to take a whiff of the stuff and tell us how it smells.

Here’s what the people had to say...»

Dispatches from February 2012

We try to steer clear of anything that isn’t hitting stores in the near future—but there’s more impressive gear on the docket for Spring/Summer ’12 than we could keep to ourselves, so we’ve put together some detail shots and some well-chosen info to whet your appetite. The bad news: you won’t be able to get your mitts on any of it until February. The good news: you’re in for quite a February.

These are a few of our favorite things…»

The Dogs of Menswear

Shipley & Halmos

Shipley & Halmos’ new e-commerce site went live this morning, with a familiar crop of fall/winter gear and a few clever quirks. For instance, apparently they’re getting into the dog business.

Leading off the one-of-a-kind Things section was Momo, bearing the inscription, “comes in usually groups of 4-6, 'Dog' is a wonderful edition to any home.” Which, true enough.

Our sources confirm that Sam & Jeff are both dog owners, but this particular gentleman belongs to the site photographer, who brought his one-of-a-kind assistant along for the shoot, and ended up inspiring some offbeat commerce. $18,095 seems a little steep…but we have to think he’s worth it.

The Illustrious Return: GQ arrives with the second half of Ian Velardi’s victory lap, spring and summer. The jumpsuit may look familiar… [GQ]
