The Dark Side

We developed quite a taste for Dark & Stormys this summer—aided in no small part by Hurricane Irene—but finding a dark rum to match our ginger beer has proven a lot harder than it looks.

Our favorite so far is Blackwell Rum, launched this summer, which has the distinct advantage of actually being from Jamaica. (For a Dark & Stormy, let’s hope your ginger beer is, too.) It's not Bermuda, where the drink originated, but for our purposes it's close enough.

It’s the brainchild of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who’s spent most of his life dealing with one Jamaican export or another. And while dark rum isn’t exactly a liquor cabinet standby, you’d be surprised how many winter cocktails it works its way into—starting with Hot Buttered Rum.
