Voters are currently electing a new mayor for the first time in over a decade, and it’s got us feeling a bit nostalgic for the benevolent billionaire. His banker-y penchant for pinstripes and Windsor knots. His flair for preppiness, rooted in his Massachusetts upbringing. His determination to announce emergency alerts in Spanish without a translator... We can’t say we’re not going to miss it all dearly. And while we’ll leave the analyzing of his political legacy to the pundits, we think his sartorial legacy while in office is also worthy of review:
Twice a year, in six cities, menswear designers, buyers, editorialists and enthusiasts flock to the tailored temple of Capsule Show. Yesterday, the leather-bound steamer trunks and garment bags arrived in droves at New York’s South Street, chock-full of new collections for SS14.
Naturally, Team Kempt hit the pavement (or, you know, carpeted warehouse) of Pier 36 in the name of trend spotting and lesson learning. With over 250 brands in attendance, we thought it best to provide a bit of a highlight reel for our loyal followers.
The venerable British summerwear brand Sunspel—you’ll recognize their iconic Riviera polo as the one favored by James Bond—is launching their first-ever pop-up this weekend at slick NYC men’s shop C’H’C’M’.
And they’re bringing the rest of Britain with them...
Well, kind of. See, along with a curated selection of their own highly sought-after polo shirts, swim trunks and breezy cotton basics, they’ve chosen to feature a few more essentials from across the pond: hats, bench-made shoes and cashmere knits, just to name a few.
They’ve also teamed up with the typography gurus at House Industries to make some one-off merch for the monthlong gig, and those of you who can get to the city tomorrow will get first dibs during the opening event from noon to 4pm. As for everyone else, the shirts will be on the webshop come Sunday.
In a perfect storm of British rakishness, custom tailor Duncan Quinn has fully kitted out a London double-decker bus with custom suits and cocktails. And he’s on his way to a town near you.
We got a sneak peak at the whole operation last night over a few barrel-aged rum cocktails (yes, those will be along for the ride) in the upstairs speakeasy and were duly impressed with the roominess of the downstairs menswear shop on wheels. The tour began last night in NYC with a three-night stint and will continue in Miami for another three nights starting February 20. It will then make its final stop in LA for another three nights starting March 26. As you can imagine, time and space is limited, so drop Mr. Quinn a line if you’d like to get suited up when he’s in town.
Sure, the whole thing is about electing a president for the next four years, but there was plenty more going on yesterday during the quadrennial festivities known as Election Day 2012. Here’s what we saw.
One of SoHo’s best specialty boutiques for menswear since April ‘06, BBlessing (say: “Blessing,” the first “B” is a nod to the owners’ previous retail project, BBS Tokyo) has an offsite sample sale over the next two days.
There’s still 8+ full rails to sort through after friends and family picked over 4 seasons of button downs, blazers, coats, trenches, trousers, knits, and $80 jeans from the store’s amazing designer group (see flyer). In terms of sizing, the bulk is 30-34 waist bottoms and M/L for tops. It’s also the first time that the house label’s hoodies and tops have gone the way of the discount; the line will expand into ready-to-wear for Spring/Summer ‘08.
