Ruby Tuesday

ruby1_crop.jpg

It may be past its 45th birthday, but the mod look is wearing its age pretty well. Boosted by the Tommy-inspired looks currently fueling menswear—along with Paul Smith’s nostalgic pastels—Swinging London is as strong now as it’s ever been.

And if you’re going to jump on a scooter, you’ll going to need a helmet to match»

The Mod Strikes Back

ijin2_crop.jpg

The mod look has having a slow renaissance for some time now, but so far it’s been confined to suits (thank you, Mr. Smith) and sportswear (thank you, Mr. Perry). Well, it’s finally trickling down.

Ijin Material isn’t particularly upscale, and having a model rock the t-shirt under a bland suit isn’t doing them any favors, but if you were wondering what a mod pair of jeans would look like, search no further.

The Steel Helmet

rubynew1_crop.jpg

Our old friends at Ateliers Ruby have revamped their classic mod helmet with a new futuristic visor for something that wouldn’t have been too out of place in Speed Racer.

We prefer the old polka dots ourselves—after all, they go better with the classic Piaggia Vespa—but the folks with more futuristic scooters need something that matches too.

Make It Pop

comesaroundgoesaround_crop.jpg

This shirt comes from What Comes Around Goes Around, which was best known as the most selective, semi-secret vintage shop in New York until this year, when they started putting out clothes of their own. Not surprisingly, it’s got a bit of a retro feel…

It’s called the Iggy Shirt, and while they say the inspiration is 80s punk, it strikes us as closer to early 60s mod. We wouldn’t be surprised to find a shirt like this on Mick Jagger or an ex-mod like Pete Townshend.

Or on the shelves at Paul Smith, for that matter.

Hot Irons

baracutawool_crop.jpg

In the interest of striking while the iron’s hot, we thought we’d direct your attention to the Baracuta shop, where jackets are currently going for half off.

Of course, we’ve weighed in on your short-cropped options before, so this time around, we’re going with a slightly more offbeat option: the Donegal wool jacket. While you’re at it, we’d order it a size smaller than your average number to make sure the fit’s appropriately mod.

Unfortunately, it’s too thin to stand up to winter winds so you probably won’t get too much wear out of it until March…but patience is a virtue too.
