In the Field

Maiden Noir

The classic army field jacket has been through a lot. (It’s not easy when the style icon carrying your torch is Travis Bickle.) But as the latest Maiden Noir version reminds us, it’s still a solid item to have in your closet—and now that the weather has officially shifted into swelter mode, it might be the handiest outerwear piece you’ve got.

The khaki is sharp in a colonial way, but our favorite is the midnight blue with a bright white contrast stitch, a good deal sharper than the army green equivalent you can pick up from army surplus. Our game plan: leave it hanging open with a notepad, wallet and cell phone in the pockets.

Travis would be impressed.

The Spring Crewneck

The crewneck sweatshirt is one of our favorite items for the lull between cold and warm weather. Worn over a collar, it’s a way to introduce a bit of ruggedness into an otherwise bland outfit, drawing from the unpretentious end of the workwear playbook.

And while we’d usually stick with the classic gray heather, this midnight blue version from Maiden Noir is too handsome to pass up. On any other item, this shade of blue would scream “gallery assistant,” but with those contrast seams, it just lends the whole piece a touch of elegance.

Just keep it as far from your gym bag as possible.
