Head-to-Toe Blanket Wool

  • Najib Benouar

Just when you thought this winter couldn’t get any colder, it gets so cold that you’d seriously consider going outdoors swaddled in a giant wool blanket.

Sadly, that won’t be in style until next winter. But luckily, some of our favorite wool mills—famous for making blankets—also cut that thick wool into shirts and pants and... bucket hats.

So, in the event that you’d like every single item on your person to be made of blanket-grade wool, here’s how you’ll do it, from head to toe...»

Considering the Beach Blanket

Beach Blanket

With Memorial Day in the rearview mirror, it’s hopefully just a matter of time before we’re all feeling a little sand between our toes. And when that day comes, the difference between you and the next schlub will be that you took the time to prepare for the occasion.

Right now, though, we’re not talking about packing sunscreen or deciding on your level of thigh exposure. (Though we’ll most certainly get there.) No, today we’d instead like to examine that essential component of any sunbather’s seaside HQ: the beach blanket. Whether it’s adorned with a bikinied lady friend or simply keeping sand out of the potato salad, no day at the shore is complete without one. And there are some handsome options in the menswear market that are more than worthy of your consideration, available as we speak.

So we’ve taken the liberty of rounding up a few of the most beach-worthy blankets we could find, just for you...»

Introducing... The Fall Must-Haves

You might have noticed it’s feeling a little more autumnal today on Kempt—as if our digital leaves were turning and a brisk breeze were wafting the comforting smell of hard apple cider through your screen...

That feeling is emanating from our left-most column, where we’ve updated our Must Haves to reflect the season’s greatest wants and needs—amongst them hounds, houndstooth and some very lovely motherfucking decorative gourds. We invite you to take a look, make a mental note and remember that they’ll be right there all season, ready to be revisited should you ever need more inspiration for your autumnal endeavors.

Though you’ll have to stitch your own blanket of sweaters.

Blanket Statement

  • Najib Benouar

The closer we get to October, finding the nearest crackling fire and blanket-mate starts sounding better and better.

And if you don’t already have a few yards of wool handsome enough to hang off the back of your couch while still outdoorsy enough for an impromptu road trip, we may have found what you’re looking for: the Foot Soldier blanket from Old Faithful Shop—who commissioned the Minnesotan blanketeers at Faribault Woolen Mills to weave an exclusive pattern of their military-spec blanket.

Which, coincidentally, calls for just enough room for two.

Taking a Backseat

In our ongoing pursuit of properly equipping you for summer road trip season, here’s an indispensable item from the tie gurus at Pierrepont Hicks and their fellow Minnesotans at Faribault Woolen Mill Co.

It’s a utilitarian-size backseat blanket that’s made from a sturdy wool, but instead of your typical woodsy look, it’s woven in bright beach-bonfire-appropriate stripes. As the name suggests, you’ll want to have this handy whenever four-wheeled wanderlust strikes.

Most importantly, it’s just big enough to share.

Parks and Recreation

Pendleton Blanket

Around May, the great outdoors start to look pretty good. So in honor of afternoons spent in the wild, Pendleton’s unveiled a line of wool blankets branded to national parks.

It’s the wilderness equivalent of a J.Press scarf, sending coded messages to anyone wonky enough to be up on these things and maintaining a grizzled obscurity towards everyone else. And if you happen to have a favorite (thanks to a youthful evening in an Acadia lighthouse, for example), it’s a pretty good way to represent.

Granted we’re more likely to hang one over the back of a couch than haul it into a tent—but it’s good to know it’s there.
