Murrayfest 2010

As artistic muses go, you could do a lot worse than Bill Murray.

To that end, LA’s R&R Gallery is holding an all out Murrayfest, a collection of the best Murray-themed work the west coast has to offer, and quite possibly the most bemused art show you’ll see all year. Highlights include a recreation of the infamous family portrait from Rushmore, a photographic gangfight between his more famous roles and, for some reason, a full-frontal nude.

We’re not critics…but we know what we like.

All My Friends

It’s one of the quirks of the social media age: with a free afternoon and a little web savvy, you can track down everyone you’ve ever met. Artist Carolina Andreoli took it one step further, ranking all her friends by importance and graphing them onto a single page. (See the big version here.)

The colors correspond to where she met them—the big blue stripes are all UK, the orange are from Brazil, and so on—while the little gray lines on the bottom refer to how much she’s kept in touch. It’s pretty spectacular to see it all mapped out…but let’s keep this one as far away from Facebook as we can.

Our favorite photoset of the day comes from courtesy of Japan’s enduring commitment to quirk—particularly regarding manhole covers. Apparently Japanese municipalities have been known to get quite creative with the iron platters, and a book/iPad app—dubbed Drainspotting—has finally come along to catalogue the most interesting ones. At their best, they’re a modern channeling of the old block print aesthetic, but even the cartoonish ones are worth a look. Trespassers

There’s a certain illicit thrill to a photo taken on someone else’s property—particularly if they didn’t know you were there.

Mikael Kennedy specializes in that kind of snap exactly: dirty polaroids of farmhouses and empty fields that he probably wasn’t supposed to be in.

Better yet, he’s a genuinely fascinating guy, as we discovered in this video. As you might imagine, it takes a lot of grit to follow the outsider-photography calling. He deserves a hat tip for pulling it off.

Disposable Pleasures

We’re strong supporters of the dusty, decades-old hardcover, but there’s nothing wrong with going the other way. This pile of staple-bound books comes from London’s Poundshop, a three-day store committed to selling everything within its walls for only a pound. Inside, you’ll find a set of sketches and charcoal drawings by one Mireille Fauchon just large enough to occupy you through a couple commutes. And when you’re done, hopefully you won’t feel too bad leaving it behind in a coffee shop. If you really like it, you can always pick up the hardcover.

Don’t Pick Up the Paintbrush Until You’re Finished

Nobody likes a grouchy critic, but if you put those same sentiments on a tote bag, you can get away with just about anything.

Case in point: this cloth sack modeled off a John Baldessari lithograph, currently on sale at the Tate Modern. If you can’t make out the cursive, it reads “I will not make boring art,” scrawled out a mind-numbing 26 times on each side.

That should teach him…

Color It In

With both claymation and comic books safely transitioned from childhood curios to highbrow art, it’s time for a few more nostalgia pieces to make the leap. And we’ve always been partial to coloring books…

This one in particular—part of the Between the Lines series—has some serious high art pedigree, with uncolored illustrations from Takashi Murakami, Raymond Pettibon and newly minted sneaker empersario Kehinde Wiley. They’re all incomplete works…but that’s the whole point. It’s one of the smarter open collaborations the art world’s seen in quite a while. All that’s missing is a place to see the works after they’ve gotten a little crayon on them, but it’s nothing a tumblr couldn’t solve.

And if you were wondering about the $20 price tag, the proceeds go to RxArt, a non-profit dedicated to bringing art into hospital settings. Hopefully they’ll bring a few books along for the ride.

The Emperor’s New Kicks

Not many artists are suited to make the leap to sneakers, but if we had to choose, Kehinde Wiley would be at the top of our list.

He’s best known for combining a neoclassical streak with a genuine affection for street culture (his take on Ice-T is a pretty good example), but apparently he’s decided all those rococo patterns wouldn’t look bad on a pair of hi-tops either. These kicks come from Puma’s new Africa collection, with a pattern borrowed from Mr. Wiley, who borrowed the look from traditional Subsaharan textiles. There are a few track jackets and t-shirts along for the ride, but they don’t capture the “regal streetwear” vibe quite as well as these.

If he’s as marketing-savvy as the rest of the art world, they might even end up in a painting or two.

Inked Up

If we have one complaint about modern art, it’s that you can’t imprint it on your bicep. Fortunately, it looks like Jenny Holzer and the Whitney have the same objection.

To coincide with Holzer’s PROTECT PROTECT show—much of which is context-free sentences on text crawls—the Whitney gift shop is offering those same phrases in temporary-tattoo form, in fonts that range from 80s metal band to 70s porn. The full set will run you $35 bucks, or roughly five bucks a day until they wear off.

Cash For Gold

It would appear the art world isn’t immune to a little financial chicanery. This gold brick is currently on sale at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art as a paperweight/doorstop, but if the $80 price tag seems a little low for ten ounces of gold there’s a reason: it’s gilded aluminum stamped with a few significant dates and christened as art.

Of course, you could always pick up the genuine article for a few hundred more…but you’d have to leave the museum first.

Walking the Cow

Chalk it up to the long tail if you want, but niche tastes are starting to get their due on the iPhone. It started with ambient museum pieces…but now developers have worked their way around to something a little more fun.

Outsider troubadour Daniel Johnston just released his first iPhone app, a Mario-style platform-jumping game featuring characters from his artwork, music from his recordings and the same sense of addled optimism that pervades just about everything he does. The froglike main character should look familiar from a mural or a t-shirt or two, but this is the first time we’ve actually seen him jump.

If you’re looking for it in the iTunes shop, the game is titled “Hi, How Are You,” after the mural’s inscription. (We’re guessing “Jeremiah the Innocent” wasn’t catchy enough.)

The dandy is a dying breed, and there’s one less today than there was a week ago. This morning’s New York Times brings word that Mr. Richard Merkin—an artist and a bon vivant, has passed away.

Of course, we have great respect for anyone who can pull off the bifecta of the bowler and boutonniere, but there’s plenty behind the outfits too. Merkin pulled off the rare, enviable trick of making a career out of a personal fixation—in his case, the more dapper corners of 20s and 30s style. It’s a subculture that’s still alive and well, and anyone with a trad streak would do well to leaf through Mr. Merkin’s catalog.
