Kempt Man of the Hour: Michael Stipe
This is a MOTH won by dint of sheer overwhelming effort on the part of quirky R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe. Simply put, Stipe staggered us with the most impressive example of layering we’ve come across all season—and trust us, the competition was fierce.
At the New York premiere of *Be Kind Rewind* the other night, Stipe wore *all* of the following: a royal blue and black Jockey stripe ascot; a blue and white mini gingham button-down; a white hooded sweatshirt with grey trim and electric blue lining; a dark blue multistripe wool blazer; a classic black down vest; a pair of dark wash denims; some artfully distressed athletic shoes; a charcoal grey pinstripe cap; a leather satchel; and an eye-catching pair of silver leather gloves. We’re out of breath just from recounting it, but the thing is, he looked pretty damned snazzy – not to mention warm – in all that gear.
Oh, and he also accessorized with a less than spiffy plywood and rubber crutch, but that was merely on account of a go-kart accident, we’re told, and not some kind of fashion statement.
