R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, last seen layering it on like a motherfucker, has always been distinctively dressed, but we’ve never seen him looking quite as natty as he did at the Food Bank for New York City’s anniversary awards gala at the Chelsea Piers the other night (where we also spotted a stylin’ Isaac Mizrahi).

Stipe, scooping up his second MOTH, stood out from the glamorous throng in a handmade chalk-striped three-piece suit from Freemans Sporting Club, a checked shirt by Thom Browne, a plain black tie from Druthers Appointments, and a scholarly pair of specs.

He was just rumpled and retro enough to remind us that it’s still rock & roll – which speaks to the essential genius of Freemans founder Taavo Somer: cool dudes can get dressed to the nines in his threads without feeling like they’ve sacrificed any street cred. And in this outfit you can even get a table at ’21′.
