Sir Edmund Hillary

This past week saw the exit of one of our personal, favorite style icons. The storied New Zealand adventurer Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to summit Mt. Everest, champion of the Nepalese people and Knight of the Most Nobel Order of the Garter, died at the respectable age of 88.

Sir Edmund Hillary

“Sir Ed” not only led a life of a committed explorer and philanthropist, but executed his expeditions with level of rugged, modest showmanship and grace that recast the role of the British adventurer for the Post-Colonial, Post-Empire era. From Freeman’s Sporting Club to England’s outdoor outfitters, the relaxed but natty look that the Kiwi brought from Everest to Antarctica is still very much alive and even if the life of gentlemanly adventure is a rare find these days, we still have the exploits of this straightforward, genteel conqueror to guide the way.
