Director Kathryn Bigelow has had a high profile lately thanks to her Iraq war flick The Hurt Locker, but she’s got a deep catalog of awesome movies behind her, and not all of them are limited to the arthouse circuit.

Her breakthrough is a frighteningly effective vampire movie called Near Dark, and thanks to the magic of synergy, it’s landing on DVD on the 7th. The 80s action movie feel is firmly in place throughout, including not one but two minor players from Aliens, but the bleak desert setting and grungy aesthetic give it a surprisingly strong kick, peaking with a bar scene that out-menaces anything in Reservoir Dogs.

And if the idea of a Western vampire movie is a bit too pop culture-y for you…there’s always Point Break?
