United Colors of Manchester
The great Sir Paul Smith may have recently signed on to design new off-pitch duds for the Manchester United Football Club (that’s soccer to you), but the sporting supermen were not always in need of such sartorial succor.
Back in the ’50s they wore good old classic club blazers when not actively pummeling opponents, and needed no other decoration, as Bonhams upcoming Sporting Sale demonstrates.
Included in the London auction house’s offerings tomorrow is this 1958 Man U. blazer that belonged to Kenny Morgans, one of the legendary Busby Babes. Made by a gent’s outfitters identified on the label as ?Society Wear? and bearing the club badge on the breast pocket, it is one of only two such blazers believed to be still in existence, and is estimated at $9,000 – $12,000.
Even Sir Paul could hardly do better.
