You may have noticed this look popping up on a few unusually forward-thinking boots this winter. All you need is a pair of work boots, a pair of large, thick boot socks and the gumption to pull them over your pant cuffs.

With the rise of Red Wing and slim-cut pants, it’s amazing it didn’t happen sooner. The only question is whether it’s actually a good idea…and we’re leaning towards no.

We don’t doubt it keeps your feet warm, which gives it a utilitarian edge on the more controversial pants-into-boots tuck. It’ll even keep your ankles dry the next time you’re trudging through snowdrifts—which is why you might plausibly see this look outside of lower Manhattan. But if you happen to be working in an indoor setting, you’re going to be spending the bulk of your day with uncomfortably warm feet and a penchant for stomping.

However, if you do decide to take the leap, you have our permission to skip Gant Rugger’s $80 boot socks in favor of the $9 Cabela’s version. They’re just as warm, and a good deal more woodsy.
