Despite what Kanye might tell you, the market for high-end streetwear based on sci-fi movie in-jokes is somewhat limited. And for A Bathing Ape, the Pharrell-endorsed Japanese import, time may be running out.

Luckily, there’s always corporate tie-ins. And BAPE has somehow talked Nintendo into giving them life support and helping Tokyo’s hipsters dress like they live in Bizarro Baltimore for a few more years. Wired reports that Nintendo is rolling out a Japan-only DS with the BAPE logo triumphantly emblazoned on it. Because nothing says “credibility” like posing for a cover shot alongside Mario.

And speaking of credibility, Kellogg’s has apparently gotten into the streetwear game as well, providing a cautionary tale to marketers everywhere. Next time you read a trend report, remember this picture:
