Menswear can seem like an old boys’ club, between all the Ralphs, the Thoms, the Billys, the Hirokis and the like...
But that’s not always the case—in fact, there are a handful of menswear-savvy women at the helm of some of our favorite labels. And we think they deserve their due. So today we’re highlighting the women behind the menswear.
Herewith, the five most influential women designers of menswear:
Filippa Hallstensson: If you’ve been wondering how Gant Rugger has suddenly become even more on-point than you even thought possible, it’s because when Christopher Bastin jumped ranks at Gant, Fifi was handed the design reins.
Eunice Lee: She’s the founder/designer of UNIS and maker of your favorite shirt, pants, everything (needless to say, she’s mastered the art of menswear staples), most notably the label’s universally loved chinos.
Margaret Howell: She cut her design teeth by making men’s shirts in the 1980s—garnering the attention of Ralph Lauren and Paul Smith—and she’s continued to turn out impeccable menswear for the past four decades as founder/designer of Margaret Howell.
Paige Mycoskie: She was named one of GQ’s Best New Menswear Designers last year as the founder/designer of Aviator Nation, which has helped usher in the current surfer-chic trend in menswear.
Rei Kawakubo: She’s been designing menswear since 1978 for a little label she launched in 1973 by the name of Comme des Garçons. Maybe you’ve heard of it?
