The Return of the Beard

Alan Moore is an interesting guy. With a few masterpiece-level comics already under his belt, the shaggy mastermind has spent the past decade or so flitting between increasingly ambitious passion projects, and these days it’s more or less impossible to tell what he’s going to do next. Also, according to the New York Times, he’s discovered the secret of immortality. So there’s that.

His latest work is Unearthing, a spoken memoir recalling his mentor in the comics industry. It brings together two underrated subgenres: the This American Life-style radio essay and instrumental post rock. Indie stars like Mike Patton and Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite show up to play some pleasant drones for the background, Moore mumbles fancy words in a North English drawl, and a photographer friend adds some shots of a pretty girl for the liner notes. In short, everybody wins.
