The Kempt Gift Guide, Part One: Formal Trinkets

Good style leaves a lot of room for flourish. No one actually needs a tussah-silk tie or a pair of pearl-topped cufflinks, which is why it’s so special when someone actually has them. That goes double for the smaller trinkets like lapel pins that are usually more memorable than expensive... and happen to make perfect gifts.

So in the name of filling out your list, we’re running down three of our favorite types of formal accessory, a perfect gift for any gentleman-of-style on your list. Even if he’s already got one, he’ll be pretty glad to have another.

Tie JewelryThis is a pretty broad category, but we’d lump in anything from the standard lapel pin to an especially fancy collar pin. (Just make sure they follow the rules.) The trinkets are small, but there’s nothing limiting you to one per customer either. Ovadia & Sons has a pretty robust vintage selection—and there’s always eBay. It’s the kind of traddish affectation that grows on you a great deal once you’re accustomed to it.

The Cigarette CaseSure, there aren’t as many smokers as there used to be, but a handsome vintage case can hold anything from business cards to a pocket notebook—and it fits perfectly into the pocket of your suit jacket. Our early favorites are here, here and here, but there’s plenty more where that came from.

The Pocket SquareIf the gentleman in question has been building his wardrobe for a while, he’s likely got a few of these already. But they’re also probably the staid white linen kind—which means an intricately detailed model like this Drake’s pocket square would blow his usual fare out of the water.

If none of those three sounds right, we’ll be updating our gift guide all month—so you should have plenty more to choose from.
