Every Wednesday we’re giving you a deeper look into what makes the minds behind Kempt tick. We call it: The Kempt Five.

0521Kempt-Five-Red-Mountain-ResortThe Great Outdoors. “I dove off the side of a sandstone cliff into a reservoir. I hiked up the same mountain in Zion National Park where dozens have plummeted to their deaths before. I chased a wild bunny. I ate an orchid. Basically, I got the hell out of the city for a few days and am all the better for it. The location: Red Mountain Resort in St. George, Utah. The food: all healthy. The focus: outdoor adventure. If you can go, go. If not, at least get outside this summer and smile at a dog or something.” —K.L.

0521Kempt-Five-Jack-Dandy-SuitJack Dandy Linen Suit. “I stumbled upon this LA-based tailoring outfit recently and was immediately intrigued by the prospect of a 100% linen suit made in America for under 300 bucks. (Also the prospect of a couple warm-weather weddings in California to attend this summer.) It’s cut and sewn in LA with a more laid-back approach to the traditional suit: the unlined jacket is a bit trimmer and shorter—with patch pockets—so it can be worn separately, and the pants feature doubled front pockets, which adds a nice, vaguely military-esque detail. After trying it on, I can already tell it’s going to get a lot of good use this summer. Linen season can’t come soon enough.” —N.B.

0521Kempt-Five-Bucket-HatHardware Store Hats. “Even when I’m at the hardware store with the specific mission of picking up lightbulbs or something, I can’t help but swing by the ‘menswear’ aisle full of the sort of actual workwear we don’t write about—for obvious reasons. But the hats, they’re great. Wide-brimmed straw hats. Bucket hats. Waxed-cotton ball caps. I’ve already got more than I can wear during a weekend of yard work.” —N.B.

0521Kempt-Five-MIdnight-Moan-Phases The Midnight Moan’s Comes in Phases. “The debut album from NYC-based blues rockers, led by Kempt’s own Andrew Paine Bradbury, dropped yesterday on iTunes . With the caveat that I’m perhaps biased, this is a completely unbiased recommendation. It’s the kind of album that’ll make you remember how great great music can be. Smoky, poignant vocals nostalgic of Jagger in his prime, paired with the kind of diverse musicality that harks back to the golden age of soul, funk, folk and rock ’n’ roll. When music was about a person playing their instrument, when the sweat and grit of life was palpable in the output.” —C.G.

0521Kempt-Five-Filson-Zippered-ToteFilson’s Zippered Tote Bag. “It’s a classic. Has been since the 1890s. So while I’m maybe late to the game, I procured one last week before heading out of town—and it’s exactly what I didn’t know I always needed. The perfect size carry-on for my computer, books and miscellany—then doubled as a beach bag. If you haven’t already: go pick one up. You’ll be happy you did.” —C.G.
