The Kempt Five

Every Wednesday, we’re giving you a deeper look into what makes the minds behind Kempt tick. We call it: The Kempt Five.
The rundown of gear, beer and frivolity we’re into this week.
Hatchet Supply Co. “Thanks to the magic of Citi Bike (and by magic, I mean the mildly-frustrating-but-still-kind-of-miraculous kind of magic), I found myself in Brooklyn Heights this weekend. And there, I found a) a really great bar called Pete’s Waterfront Ale House (get the fish-and-chips) and b) a sort of Best-Made-by-way-of-Brooklyn shop called Hatchet Outdoor Supply Co. It was... pretty great. Lots of stuff by Boast, lots of great coffee mugs and thermoses, even a vintage Levi’s trucker jacket that, I was told, Ethan Hawke had been coveting that very morning. (Maybe the cat face patch on the back was a bit too cute for him.) Oh, and they’re having a pretty huge sale right now. So take the F train, or grab a Citi Bike, and get on that. (And read a bit more here.)” —P.L.U.
White Jeans on the Tuesday After Labor Day. “This is an annual tradition I’ve swiped from my old boss. It’s a bit on the nose, as sartorial fuck-yous go, but there’s still something playful/powerful about defying tradition in such an overt way. And hey, getting dressed is supposed to be fun, right? (Oh, and as this guy proved, white jeans work year round.)” —P.L.U.
Inspiration Information. “I found myself in possession of a friend’s iPod last week, and while I have every intention of returning it, I took the opportunity to get into some old classics outside my regular Spotify queue. On their recommendation, ‘...just to go to a happy place, put on Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis. Full album front to back. Like entering the subconscious of a cartoon character who happens to be a mutherfucker at the blues and soul,’ I obliged, and found the happy place of music drunk. Suggesting you all follow suit accordingly.” —C.G.
Naked Dove Brewing Company. “I went to a wedding up in the Finger Lakes this past weekend, and on tap for the night were hops from a local microbrewer, Naked Dove. I ended up stopping into the brewery for a tour and tasting on Saturday; it’s a really cool operation. They grow and harvest all their own ingredients, and flavors change seasonally/accordingly. The highlight was the Berry Naked Black Raspberry Ale—not too sweet, just enough fruit to be summery but still had a nice, sharp cut to it.” —C.G.
The Late-Summer Getaway. “On account of spending a few fleeting, Indian-summer-like days this past weekend at a friend's cabin in Lake Tahoe, I advise you do the same. Hop in the car, book a flight, ride your bike to the nearest body of water. Just don’t let summer slip away without one last hurrah before it’s time to pack away the shorts and lose the tan.” —N.B.
