When it first came out in 1973, Lou Reed's tragic rock opera *Berlin*disappointed fans who'd been expecting an upbeat follow-up to his glam opus *Transformer*. Left to gather dust, it took twenty years for critical opinion to come around and finally dub it a masterwork.
Larger-than-life artist/auteur Julian Schnabel had, of course, always been a believer.
In 2006, Schnabel helped stage the first live performance of *Berlin*, which ran for five days at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. He filmed the whole thing for a documentary, interspersed with footage of *Diving Bell and the Butterfly* beauty Emmanuelle Seigner in the role of the Caroline character. The brilliant result debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival the other night, where the two icons came together to celebrate. We were there to capture the moment of course, and get a peek at Schnabel's trademark purple pajamas.
In case it isn't perfectly obvious by now, guys who've contributed this much to the culture of cool can wear whatever the fuck they want. *You* however should leave the pj's and plaid straightjackets at home until you've earned 'em.
