Christie’s auction of Gert Elfering’s private collection came to a close yesterday, allowing us to attach a dollar value to nudity.
Most notably, our favorite first lady ended up just shy of six figures, pulling down $91,000 for a full-frontal Michel Comte snap from 1993. The more striking Lauren Hutton pic (at left) went for $127,000, but we’re sure having Richard Avedon’s name attached didn’t hurt.
The nude Gisele netted $193,000—not surprising, given that it was at the center of much of the press surrounding the auction—but the top honors went to Helmut Newton’s “Naked and Dressed,” a diptych of four women dressed in one picture, nude in the other, which sold for $241,000. It would appear quantity matters after all.
Sadly, Janet Jackson’s famous Rolling Stone cover photo went for only $10,625, showing, as Gawker pointed out, that covered breasts really do hurt resale value.
