Kempt Man of the Hour: John Waters

We always just kind of took it for granted that king-of-camp John Waters only ever wears vintage threads. That's what the writer/director's skinny suits and ties always looked like to us, and it seemed to match his retro persona perfectly. The other night at the opening of the new musical version of his 1990 film
It was the modernized boating blazer that tipped us off, of course; our first thought was Thom Browne, but then we noticed it actually seemed to fit him. Turns out Waters' jacket is by Comme des Garçons. Of course he put his own spin on it, pairing the blazer with a Yohji Yamamoto tie and a pair of grey camouflage pants from Tokyo hipster emporium United Arrows. Rounding things off are a crisp white shirt and a pair of black suede sneakers, both also by Yamamoto. The harmony and subtlety of the color scheme keeps the whole a perfect balance between classically stylish and appropriately quirky; no mean feat.
Color us confounded by all the blue-chip Japanese labels, with nary a piece of vintage in sight. Quite the closet fashionista, our Mr. Waters.
