Travel Week has got us waxing nostalgic about the days when traveling was still one of the more exciting things you could do.
It was a time when a gentleman with an idle afternoon and an adventurous streak might just head to the nearest ticket counter and buy a one-way fare to wherever the money in his pocket could take him—the kind of spontaneity that’s been largely ruined by online booking and 24-hour pre-boarding check-ins.
The adventure was just as much about the journey as it was the destination—whether it be a sleepy hamlet upstate, or the big city. And while nowadays a plane flight is probably out of the question, there’s still plenty of opportunity to get out of Dodge for an afternoon the next time you find yourself aimlessly wandering the halls of Grand Central or Union Station.
