Boats Against the Current

The Great Gatsby has seen a lot of half-hearted film adaptations, but they’ve finally put together one we’re excited about. The advanced snap above is a pretty good indication of why: a pitch-perfect Carey Mulligan as Daisy. But after that...let’s just say, things get complicated.

The big surprise is the director: Baz Luhrmann, best known for the sensory attack of Moulin Rouge and not the first person you’d choose for a tone of class-conscious melancholy. Having said that, the man can direct the hell out of a party scene, and having Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire onboard as Gatsby and Carraway doesn’t hurt.

But more important, the time is ripe for Gatsby, and an overblown, Lurhmann-esque version might be just what the story needs. The wealthy, careless parts of the world have been pretty well-documented in the past few years—losing no small part of their rarified glamour—but that’s nothing a little soft-focus can’t fix. More importantly, the thirst for the old, authentic world is as powerful as it’s ever been, which sets the stage pretty well for a story about souls borne ceaselessly into the past.

Speaking of which, we hear top hats are coming back…
