Bob Dylan

Every Wednesday from here on out, we’re giving you a piece of our minds. Actually, more like five pieces. It’s a chance to get a deeper look into what makes the minds behind Kempt tick—you know, beyond the usual Internet handsomeness we’re serving up daily. So welcome to our most personal weekly feature: The Kempt Five.

Here’s the rundown of shoes, shows and shenanigans we’re digging this week.

Blue BassBlue Bass Buckinghams. “I picked up a pair last summer, and they’ve been my warm-weather go-to shoe ever since. Not as dandy or precious as white bucks, and not as ubiquitous as boat shoes, they’re a simple but handsome pair you can put on sockless or with a cotton suit, and look just as good. The proverbial ‘wear it from the office to the bar’ shoe. Bonus: pretty affordable.” —P.L.U.

BarbershopA Solid $20 Barbershop. “These stern Russian men on 25th who cut my hair might not be the best conversationalists, but they do manage some spectacular scissor work, and for about as much as ‘just a little off the top’ should cost. So za tvojó zdoróvʹje to them.” —S.P.

OITNBOrange Is the New Black. “In this late-summer television lull, this show is easily the best thing on. And definitely the best thing on Netflix—perhaps the first real sign that their original programming concept has a bright future. The show follows the incredible-but-actually-true story of a typically law-abiding preppy blonde 30-year-old in the midst of launching a scented soap business (and recently engaged) who’s suddenly sentenced to prison for 15 months for that one time she partook in some light drug trafficking the summer after college. It’s funny, sad, weird, gross, quirky, redeeming and everything else you’d imagine getting sent to prison suddenly for transgressions 10 years past would feel like. In other words: a great summer show to pick up and devour.” —N.B.

Ewan McGregorEwan McGregor, GQ, January 2012. “It’s not totally timely, but (in part thanks to our recent men-in-skirts post) this shoot’s been on my mind. In particular, the blue socks with blue suede wingtips shot. The guy just looks really sharp, but in a way that you (or anyone) could easily make your own.” —P.L.U.

Beach concertBeachside Concert Nostalgia. “I went back home this weekend to catch Bob Dylan (and the rest of the Americanarama Festival) at Jones Beach. His vocals sounded awful, which was expected, but I still felt like I’d won something when he started into his third song and I realized it was ‘She Belongs to Me’ (modestly, top three favorite songs of all time). I grew up on the South Shore, and spent summer nights with my family anchored out in the bay whenever it was clear enough to catch a bit of whatever act was in town. Later that pastime evolved into parking-lot tailgating with friends through my high school years. Coming back to that place, seeing Bob for the first time and having him play that song just felt like all of my best summer memories coming full circle.” —C.G.
