Every Wednesday we’re giving you a deeper look into what makes the minds behind Kempt tick. We call it: The Kempt Five.

070914-All-Star-Future-GameMLB All-Star Futures Game. “Two great reasons to head to Minnesota for the All-Star Game festivities: 1, self-serve beer. 2, the Futures Game on Sunday, where baseball’s best minor leaguers square off, USA-vs.-the-world-style. Last year, I took in the match at Citi Field, and a) tickets were dirt cheap; b) the players (including Mets ace-in-training Noah Syndergaard) took their time signing autographs and interacting with fans; c) the game itself was pretty damn fun. It’s basically a chance to see the best prospects in baseball in one place—for example, this year’s rosters include Joey Gallo (pictured), who is beating the absolute hell out of the ball at AA. And if you can’t make it to the Twin Cities, you can see the game on MLB.com. The only catch: you’ll have to serve yourself your own beer.” —P.L.U.

070914-Wilco-AMWilco’s A.M. “What’s a summer barbecue without some all-American tunes blaring from your backyard… or rooftop. I couldn’t be hooked on anything better this week than the 1995 debut album of Chicago’s very own Wilco. And since we’re talking about the ’90s, here’s another one for your grillin’ playlist: Whiskeytown’s Strangers Almanac, released 17 years ago this July.” —B.M.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Best Way to Let In That Ankle Breeze. “Well, the humidity is here. I kind of miss you, polar vortex. Oh well, at least there’s Mocc Socks—they’re my favorite way to go sockless (without actually going sockless) when the heat gets strong enough to make ankle breeze a thing I want in my life. They stay completely hidden, but they’re thick enough to keep a good buffer between your fine leather uppers and your… whatever’s happening with your feet. Also, they come in three color options. For some reason.” —L.P.

Jimi: All Is by My Side Trailer. “André Benjamin. Who knew. Sure, he displayed an acting chop or two in Four Brothers and… Semi-Pro. But if this trailer for Jimi: All Is by My Side is any indication, we’ve got a budding star on our hands. Guy just nails Hendrix in every way. Congratulations, Mr. 3000, you’ve earned your real last name back.” —K.L.

070914_De-Niro-Taxi-LicenseBobby De Niro’s Hack License. “For a few weekends in 1976, Robert De Niro prepared for his role in Taxi Driver by actually becoming a licensed driver, picking up fares and generally living the life of a disgruntled cabbie—and Open Culture dug up the proof. (Apparently one passenger recognized him.) Just when you thought the guy couldn’t get any damn cooler.” —N.B.
