Every Wednesday, we’re giving you a deeper look into what makes the minds behind Kempt tick. We call it: The Kempt Five.

0115KMT_Five_1 La Grande Bellezza. “There was just one Golden Globe I cared about: the one that went to La Grande Bellezza, a 142-minute fever dream of pure sprezzatura from Italian director Paolo Sorrentino. It has no discernible plot, and doesn’t need one. I was content to spend an afternoon in the dark and watch Toni Servillo’s aging novelist eat, drink and ruminate his way through the marble halls and Technicolor nightlife of modern Rome in a series of progressively more fantastic menswear. If you’ve ever daydreamed of being an Italian playboy, this one’s for you.” —E.T.

0115KMT_Five_2 The Palm Canyon Collection. “Midwinter blues be damned, the gents from Warby Parker just released a number of their classic frames in a sunnier California-inspired palette of materials. Which is handy, because a) like many a 13-year-old klutz, I’m pretty sure I threw away my glasses with my lunch the other day, and b) it’s right about this point in January when I’ll do anything to pretend I’m somewhere balmier. Pick up a pair and convince yourself that you can somehow get a tan through a cardigan.” —S.P.

Bruce Springsteen, “Dream Baby Dream.” “This is the last song on the Boss’s new album, High Hopes. Except… that version isn’t that good. What you really want is the version he used to close his solo shows with on the Devils and Dust tour back in 2005. It’s a cover of a Suicide song, though the lyrics are so pure and earnest, you’d suspect it was a Bruce original. You can find a few performances on YouTube; the eight-minute one here is particularly astonishing. That sensation you’re feeling? That’s the hair standing up on the back of the neck.” —P.L.U.

0115KMT_Five_4 Club Monaco Merino Quarter Zip. “You don’t realize what you’re missing out on until you get a nice fine gauge wool quarter-zip sweater. This thing is versatile as heck, great for layering in these uncertain weather times and as opposed to most quarter zips you’ll see with the longer, floppier collar, this one stays nice and neat over your button-down. (As demonstrated.)” —N.B.

0115KMT_Five_5 Jay Z Magna Carta World Tour. “Normally, you’d have to beat me out of my apartment on a Sunday night, but this weekend I had the opportunity to join Hublot for the opening night of Magna Carta at Barclays (perks of the job). Naturally, I obliged, and thankfully, Hova hasn’t lost his swag. It was 90% throwback, with Timbaland spinning the entire show, and just completely stellar. As an added bonus (clearly necessary), I was able to check out the new Shawn Carter collection for Hublot. Starting at an (ahem) accessible $18K-ish, they’re the most affordable pieces in Hublot’s arsenal—and they officially make horology Jay’s 67th profession. Jigga-man FTW.” —C.G.
